Uuganjargal Tsetsgee of Mongolian got a boat capsize in the middle of the racing water in the Good Luck Beijing Canoe/Kayak Flatwater China Open here on Thursday, ending her competition in the kayak single (K1) 500m women.
The accident ended her competition in the event and she was saved immediately afterwards, Luo Bing, an technical official of the sport event told reporters Sunday evening.
"We check every boat before the competition. And the athletes also check their boats before the competition. There is nothing wrong with the boat. It is the athlete's improper handling that causes the accident," Luo said.
All the boats taking part in the flatwater competition are provided by factories designated by the International Canoe Federation and athletes can hire the boats if necessary, Luo added.
"Generally speaking, the first day competition of the four-day event goes smoothly. But we will check every facility in the venue to ensure smooth operation of the venue and competition in the coming days," Luo said.
Boat capsize in flatwater racing occurs sometimes mostly due to the improper use of skills by athletes in competition. The life boats will immediately come to help in case of such accidents.
