Cyprus hailed a world championships bronze medal won by Cypriot high jumper Kyriacos Ioannou as a "major victory" in the Athletic history of the eastern Mediterranean island state.
"Ioannou's victory is the greatest international achievement by a Cypriot athlete in the history of classic sports," President Tassos Papadopoulos said Wednesday in a written statement.
He added that it was "a significant moral boost" for all Greek Cypriots during hard times when Greece was savaged by the huge forest blaze.
Bahamian Donald Thomas won the gold medal by clearing 2.35 meters at his first attempt and Russian Yaroslav Rybakov grabbed his third world championship silver after taking two attempts to clear 2.35 meters.
Ioannou cleared the same height in his second attempt but his disadvantage at pervious height meant Cyprus's first medal of the championships was a bronze.
