The Zimbabwe team look set to travel to the Special Olympics in China later this month without holding a final training camp because of lack of funds, The Herald reported on Tuesday.
The team managed to hold a preparatory camp from June 22 to June 25 at Prince Edward and athletics coach Christine Rimbi had been hoping for another camp shortly before departure.
But Special Olympics Zimbabwe national director and World Games coordinator Bonny Woodman said the organization had limited finances to successfully re-group for training before departure.
"It is a good idea that we meet for a camp before we leave but at the moment we just do not have the money," she said.
The Games are running from October 2 to 11 in Shanghai, China, and this year marks the first time that the Special Olympics are being held in Asia where almost 7,500 mentally challenged athletes from 160 countries and regions are expected to attend.
Woodman, however, said the 19 athletes selected for the Games were continuing with their preparations under their coaches.
SOZ is sending the 19 to participate in bocce, golf, athletics and swimming.
