German gymnasts made history here on Tuesday by finishing third in the qualification round of the 40th World Gymnastics Championships, the best ever performance for the German men's team.

Led by Aarhus world championships bronze medalist Fabian Hambuechen, the Germans stunned the audience to score 364.350 points, overwhelming traditional strong teams like Romania and Russia for the third place.

Just a year ago in Aarhus of Denmark, Germany was still short of experienced gymnasts and had to give up the team competition.

Of course, the Germans were shy of nearly 10 points compared to the Chinese team as the defending champions downed the Japanese to take the first place in preliminaries.

Together with Germany, the United States surprised gymnastics know-how to occupy the fourth place, and South Korea overtook France with just 0.5 point for the eighth place, the last ticket for the team final.

With the completion of the men's qualifying round on Tuesday, favorites for individual events have emerged.

Gymnasts from 18 different countries will be present in the all-around final on Friday. Among them are not only gymnasts from traditionally strong gymnastics nations like China or Russia but also gymnasts from countries like Uzbekistan and Venezuela.

In the apparatus finals on the weekend, gymnasts from 24 different countries will stage their performance.

According to the estimates of the official website of the tournament, China is in the lead with eight opportunities for their gymnasts to win further medals on the weekend.

Japan follows closely behind with seven and then the USA, Germany and the Netherlands will also have some chances in the event finals.
