After four consecutive losses, Iran finally won a match in the top eight round of the 2007 Asian men's volleyball championship on Friday by defeating Thailand in a five-set thriller.
Iran had lost to South Korea, Japan, China and Australia before Friday's game in the final eight round which is played under a round robin system.
It took Iran nearly two hours to beat Thailand with a scoreline of 25-20, 22-25, 25-16, 22-25, 15-10.
Falling behind 2-1, Thailand launched a strong comeback in the fourth set. Led by Tabwises Wanchai, who had five aces in a row, Thailand took the fourth set with 25-22.
But Iran established a early lead _ 6-4 in the deciding set and extended it to 11-5. Thailand tried to claw it back at 13-10 but a successful block by Mohammadkazem Mohammad gave Iran the match point.
At 14-10, Wanchai served long to hand Iran the victory.
Both teams now have 1-4 win-loss record in the tournament and lost the chance to bid for a medal in the Asia championship.
