Host Vietnam snatched a 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabia in an exciting soccer match in the qualifying round for the Beijing Olympic Games here Wednesday.
In the first goalless half of the Group C game, Saudi Arabia launched many attacks, but they were not serious enough to beat Vietnamese goalie Tran Duc Cuong.
For the home side, striker Nguyen Anh Duc missed a scoring chance for Vietnam in the 43th minute when he received a long pass from his teammate, but his shot was too light to defeat Saudi Arabia's goalkeeper.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, Vietnamese forward Le Cong Vinh scored the opening goal with a low header after receiving ball from a teammate who conducted a free kick.
Led in advance, Saudi Arabia's players strived to level score and their efforts paid off when striker Naif Ahmed Hazazi delivered the ball into the goal with a powerful header in a close range in the 80th minute.
The group C includes Vietnam, Japan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The top of the Group C, and those of other groups in Asia, along with China, will advance into the final round.
