Group A rivals Germany and England will meet in an European derby in the Women's World Cup in Shanghai Friday, which will have a decisive impact on the chase for quarter-final places.
A Germany win would confirm the holders early qualification for the last eight, but England are expected to provide considerably tougher resistance than Argentina did in the Opening Match, as they look to improve their prospects of a quarter-final place with at least a point.
Germany got their tournament under way with a record 11-0 win over Argentina, thrilling the crowds with their impressive firepower. But England know what to expect, not overawed by the defending champion.
"We're a little bit disappointed with the result (with Japan) but we have to pick ourselves up for the Germany game. They're the world champions and we're going to be very focused. We are hoping to put on another good performance, getting the point we need," said England forward Kelly Smith.
England would love to take at least a point, given Japan will fancy their chances of beating Argentina, and with Kelly Smith they have cause for optimism.
"With Kelly Smith, England have a player we'll have to keep an eye on," Germany defender Ariane Hingst said. "But we have 11 players that England will have to watch out for. If we hit top form then England won't have a chance against us."
However, the chance for Germany to break the 11-0 record is little. "All our remaining opponents will definitely be stronger than Argentina." Germany forward Birgit Prinz warned.
