The world's eight best chess players started on Thursday their first round World Chess Championship Mexico-2007 games at 14:00 local hours.
The opening ceremony was held at a centric hotel in Mexico City's Historic Center and the closing ceremony is slated for September 30.
City government head Marcelo Ebrard inaugurated on Wednesday night the World Chess Championship Mexico-2007.
Chess and life share similarities, discipline and calculations that this sport uses are similar to our daily life, Ebrard said.
Other officials present at the ceremony included Mexico-2007 Chess-Championship Organizing Comittee President Jorge Saggiante Garcia who said having this Championship in Mexico is a dream come true, and he handed over to Marcelo Ebrard a FIDE and Mexican arts & craft hand-made Commemorative Chess Set.
The last event of this sort in Mexico was played 22 years ago in Taxco, Guerrero and it was a candidates tournament for the World Chess Championship.
The championships offer a total prize money of one million 300 thousand U.S. dollars, 300,000 dollars for the champion and a minimum of 60,000 dollars for last placer.
