The four second round games for the World Chess Championship Mexico 2007 ended on Friday with exciting moves by the world's eight best players fighting for the world crown.
World champion Vladimir Kramnik defeated his Russian countryman Alexander Morozevich after 27 moves, another Russian Peter Svidler drew with Hungarian Peter Leko in 43 moves.
Armenian Levon Aronian was defeated in 41 by Anand Vishwanathan of India, and Israeli Boris Gelfand drew in 23 moves against Alexander Grishuk of Russia.
The chess openings being played in the second round included a Ruy Lopez in the Svidler-Leko game, an Indo-Benoni in the Gelfand-Grischuk game, a Queen's Gambit in the Aronian-Anand game and a Queen's Gambit Refused in the Kramnik-Morozevich game.
After the second round, Kramnik and Anand lead the standings with 1.5 points, Svidler, Leko, Gelfand, and Grischuk all have one point each, followed by Morozevich and Aronian with half a point apiece.
The third round games will pitch Morozevich-Svidler, Anand-Kramnik, Grischuk-Aronian and Leko Gelfand.
The tournament offers a total prize money of 1.3 million U.S. dollars with 300,000 dollars for the champion and a minimum of 60,000 dollars for last placer.
