Portugal Professional Football Players Association (SJPF) in a Monday statement condemned national soccer team manager, Luiz Felipe Scolari, for his Wednesday night attack on a Serbian player during an international match.
"Despite the excuses given, Scolari acted irresponsibly. He cannot maintain the attitude which he so unhappily had on Sept. 12," the statement said.
Scolari hit Serbian defender Ivica Dragutinovic at the end of a 1-1 draw played in Lisbon's Avlalade Stadium. After the attack he made a public apology to the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), to the European Union Football Association (UEFA) and to all Portuguese.
The SJPF said that it was now up to UEFA and the FPF to apply the appropriate sanction. UEFA's disciplinary committee has begun an investigation into the incident and will announce its decision on Wednesday.
