Mexican golfer Lorena Ochoa, world number one player according to the Ladies Golf Professionals Association, collected some two million pesos (182,000 U.S. dollars) during the Heart Open held in the western Mexico city of Guadalajara.
The Open tournament attracted 80 golfers and 200 watchers and several companies that contributed cash to the cause: a home for children with cancer in Tepalpa, in the state of Jalisco backed by Ochoa.
"It's a pretty incredible figure," said Monica Marron, head of public relations at Ochoa Sports.
Ochoa, who also leads the 2007 LPGA earnings table, welcomed the golfers to the 17th hole and played alongside them.
Other famous players at the event were Alejandra Martin del Campo, Sofia Sheridan and Ochoa's coach, Rafael Alarcon.
