Argentine tennis player Paola Suarez, rated the best doubles player in Argentine history, announced her retirement at a Tuesday press conference in Buenos Aires.
"It will be very hard to live without tennis. Many years of sacrifice, travel, stories, experiences and a whole world has come to an end. I will try to remain active to avoid feeling the enormous gap which no longer playing will mean," said the 31-year-old player, who was world number one alongside Spaniard Virginia Ruano Pascual and won four singles titles and 44 in doubles.
"I have achieved everything, except Wimbledon, but the most important achievement of my career was my Olympic bronze in Athens in 2004" along with Patricia Tarambini, she said.
Suarez's singles ranking peaked at number 9, when she reached the semi-final of Roland Garros, losing to Russia's Anastasia Myskina.
In doubles she won Roland Garros four times, the U.S. Open three times, the Australian Open in 2004 and the Los Angeles Masters in 2003. She was beaten three times in the Wimbledon doubles final.
Her doubles record is 491 victories and 173 defeats, compared with 368 victories and 233 victories in singles.
