Mexico's president Felipe Calderon on Tuesday formally congratulated a women's swimming team from that country for breaking English Channel swimming record by eight minutes on Aug. 11.

At a ceremony in Mexico's seat of government, Los Pinos, Calderon said "you have shown that it is possible to make Mexico a winning nation: respected and internationally recognized. I am sure that this new generation that you belong to will change our nation."

Nora Toledano, the first Mexican to swim the channel, trained the 66k High Seas team: Laura Vaca, Helen Plashinski, Isabel Cantu, Ana Roldan, Nicole Gonzalez-Hermosillo and Leticia Flores. The team beat a record set by a British team.

The new world record is an example of what can be done with perseverance and hard work, Calderon said, calling on all Mexicans to play sports, not only to win medals but also to care for their health, have a better quality of life and defend young people from addictions.
