I'm still learning to balance tennis and baby, says Davenport

American veteran Lindsay Davenport said on Wednesday that she is still learning to balance tennis and baby she gave birth to just three months ago.

"I have to focus hours a day on my son and it's really important. It's hard to be good at both and I'm still learning," said the 31-year-old.

"As he's getting bigger and bigger, my arms are hurting more. But I think months later I will get used to that. There are still ways to go for me to be more patient. Luckily he's quite a good sleeper."

Davenport won an all-American match in the first round of the China Open here on Wednesday after outplaying qualifier Julie Ditty 6-0, 6-2 in just 48 minutes without having to raise her game much above the ordinary.

One of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour's all-time greats, Davenport capped a stunning return to action last weekend, winning the Commonwealth Bank Tennis Classic singles title in Bali, Indonesia.

"I really was surprised. I never imagined that I would win the tournament. Before I was leaving for Bali I didn't know how ready I was. I was a little nervous at first because I didn't want to go there and have bad results.

"It was a great week and I decided to keep going in China Open."

Having not played a single event between last September and this August, let alone a singles event until just last week, Davenport came into Bali as some sort of unknown quantity.

With a then ranking of No. 234, few thought her a threat at all, especially given the marquee names populating the Tier III draw. But she went through the two top guns, namely top seed Jelena Jankovic and second seed Hantuchova, to get to the title, which was the 52nd of her career.

Davenport is now the lowest-ranked player to capture a title this season and the fourth-lowest in history. Her triumph is reminiscent of fellow greats Monica Seles and Serena Williams, who both made title runs immediately after returning from lengthy lay-offs (at 1995 Toronto and 2004 Miami, respectively).
