Rookie Yang Fan of China flung the pressure off his shoulder to overcome Im Yong-su of DPR Korea to take the gold medal in the men's 62kg category at the world weightlifting championships on Wednesday.
The 20-year-old Yang stole the spotlight as he combined lifts of 142kg in the snatch with 173kg in the clean and jerk to finish with 315kg.
"It's my first time to compete in the worlds, but actually I am not very excited with the gold medal," Yang told the press.
"I thought I could lifted 320kg in the competition, so I was not satisfied with my result," he added.
Both lifters hoisted 142kg in the snatch, Im, 28, challenged Yang at his last attempt as he lifted 173kg to finish the competition with a total of 315kg.
Yang was forced to lifted the same weight to win the gold because of the body weight advantage.
With a roar from Yang before he stepped onto the stage, the new bud made a awesome display of strength and power, lifting a decisive 173kg above his head to knock down the gold medal.
"I was not nervous at the last lift, but I felt the pressure. I knew I could do it because I could lift such weight with easy in the training," Yang said.
Im, who had never competed in the international championships before, did not appear in the press conference.
"He has great power, and he showed his strong mind during the competition," said He Yicheng, Yang's coach.
"It is very easy to lift 173kg for him in training, however, it is not easy to made three good attempts in the jerk. I am going to praise him," added He.
Im claimed the silver and Ivaylo Filev of Bulgaria the bronze on 301kg.
