Portugal's national soccer coach Brazilian native Luiz Felipe Scolari said on Thursday he will appeal the punishment imposed by the European Union's Soccer Associations (UEFA) after his aggression against Serbian player Ivica Dragutinovic in the Portugal-Serbia game.
"I believe the sanction is excessive. The athlete that originated all this situation was punished for two games. That is why I am going to appeal this decision," Scolari said in a press conference, after his punishment was made public, a four-month suspension and 12,000 euros penalty.
Scolari appeared before the press on Thursday afternoon after meeting with the president of Portugal's Soccer Federation, Gilberto Madail, who also considered the punishment "an excessive sanction for the national team."
After a two-hour meeting with Scolari, Madail said he has called an emergency meeting for Monday to decide what to do.
In a televised session last week, Scolari assured he does not intend to resign from his post.
