South Asian nations India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh will be among top countries competing for medals when cricket is introduced into the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, organizers of the 2010 Asian Games said in Colombo Friday.
Organizers of the Guangzhou Asian Games, who are in Colombo on promotional tour across South Asia, have promised a spectacular show when cricket is introduced into the event for the first time ever.
The proposal to include cricket into the Asian Games was approved at the Olympic Council of Asia's (OCA) General Assembly in Kuwait earlier this year and has brought to millions of cricket fans right across Asia.
"Cricket is South Asian countries' forte. The introduction of cricket will give these countries more chances to win gold medals and improve the level of China's cricket teams," said Fang Daer, marketing department director of Guangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee.
Guangzhou overcame an impressive list of candidates in July 2004 to win the right to host the 2010 Asian Games.
The city will renovate 78 exiting sports facilities and will build a new Asian Games Village, media center and 21 stadiums.
"The media and promotional tour across South Asia was made three years before the 2010 Asian Games and it is a strong indication of Guangzhou's zealousness for the event. I wish the Games a great success," said Sri Lanka's National Olympic Committee Chairman Hemasiri Fernando.
