Oscar-winning musician Tan Dun said on Monday that the Special Olympics has inspired him and he believed the sports gala for the mentally challenged would be a complete success.
"The Special Olympics has given me spirit," the composer of the Oscar-winning soundtrack for "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" told a press conference after a rehearsal of the opening ceremony.
"I am impressed by the organization of the opening ceremony; it is so professional. It reminds me the organization of the Oscar awarding ceremony, which in my opinion is the most professional."
Tan composed music for the Special Olympic flag march-in ceremony and will also conduct a symphony orchestra during the ceremony Tuesday night.
"I am honored to do these. I choose ringing of bells and ancient Chinese poet Li Bai's lines to stand for the long Chinese history, and I use children's voices to represent the future of China. It will give people a feeling of 'Harmonious Oneness of the Universe and Man.'"
Asked what he has gained from the event, Tan said: "At the beginning, I thought I was giving, doing what I can for the mentally disabled. But now I do think they give me more."
"The courage and talent of the Special Olympians is inspiring me to compose more and better music," he added.
