An additional gala performance will be held just prior to the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the organizer has said.
Such a gala, to last an hour and a half, will be also held ahead of the opening ceremony of next year's Paralymics, said Liu Jingmin, vice mayor of Beijing and also executive vice president of the Beijing Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games (BOCOG).
Programs of the pre-ceremony galas, featuring songs, dances and other art forms, will be produced by Chinese regions, Liu told a meeting on preparatory work for the two opening ceremonies.
Chinese film director Zhang Yimou, who is masterminding the 2008 Olympic opening and closing ceremonies, has said that the opening ceremony will last about three hours and a half, in which the gala part will last about an hour.
Zhang plans to collect the smiles of 10,000 children of different regions, colors and races all over the world to be displayed at the opening ceremony.
Hollywood director Steven Spielberg, Australian Ric Birch and Frenchman Yves Pepin will serve as artistic consultants for the ceremonies.
The Beijing Olympics are expected to attract four billion viewers of TV relay around the globe, 100 million more than that of the 2004 Athens Olympics, according to Ma Guoli, Chief Operation Officer of Beijing Olympics Dissemination Corporation Ltd..
