Vietnam is striving to bag home 1-3 medals at the coming Beijing Olympic Games 2008, local newspaper People's Army reported Wednesday.
Vietnam may gain a weightlifting gold medal or at least a silver one. The country pins the greatest hope on man weightlifter Hoang Anh Tuan, although he has yet to win a berth to the event slated for August 8-27, 2008 in Beijing, China.
Vietnam hopes 20-30 of its athletes, including taekwondo, weightlifting, shooting and athletics ones, will gain berths to the event, the newspaper said.
The country won its first-ever Olympic medal with 26-year-old woman athlete Tran Hieu Ngan taking a taekwondo silver medal at Sydney Olympic Games 2000.
In recent years, Vietnam has focused investment in priority sports, most outstanding athletes, qualified foreign coaches, and application of scientific and technological advancements in sports.
The country's priority sports include athletics, aquatic sports, gymnastics, shooting, martial arts, soccer, volleyball, table tennis, bodybuilding, weightlifting, cycling, wrestling, sepak takraw and chess.
