World famous Spanish tenor Jose Carreras, one of the "Three Tenors", is expected to join the closing ceremony of the Special Olympics scheduled on Oct. 11, according to general-director Teng Junjie on Sunday.
The closing ceremony is to be held at the Jiangwan Stadium in Yangpu District of Shanghai, and last about 80 minutes. All of the 10,000 athletes and coaches, as well as their families are expected to participate in the ceremony.
The director said about 200 volunteers and 60 intellectually disabled athletes will build a stage for the ceremony performance within just three to four minutes.
The world renowned saxophone star Kenny G is expected to present traditional Chinese music, said the general director.
Mentally disabled Chinese conductor Zhou Zhou will also appear at the ceremony, conducting an orchestras named "Prelude for Festival". Zhou, the 25-year-old conductor who has the intellectual level of a four or five year old child, is today a household name in China for his musical talent.
A tree hanging greeting cards of some 7,500 Special Olympics athletes will be presented on the ceremony.
"Athletes will see an unforgettable farewell party full of love and sunshine," Teng said.
Started on Oct. 2, the Shanghai Special Olympics will last until Oct. 11.
