Timothy Shriver, Chairman of Special Olympics International (SOI), spoke highly of the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games that ended in Shanghai on Thursday.
"The Special Olympics in Shanghai has been very successful and impressive," Shriver said in a meeting with Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu.
The Chinese government has made great efforts to ensure the success of the Special Olympics, he said.
"The successful games will not only benefit the global drive to better protect the interests of mentally disabled people but also let the world know the achievements China has made in protecting its disabled population," he said.
Hui Liangyu said he appreciated the support and assistance the SOI had offered China.
"Thanks to the joint efforts by the SOI, the organizing committee and the whole of Chinese society, China managed to host the Special Olympics with the largest ever number of participants," said Hui, also honorary president of the organizing committee of the games.
Chinese government will carry on its efforts to protect the rights and interests of people with intellectual disabilities, he said.
The ten-day games, which feature 21 medal sports and four demonstrating events, attracted 7,450 athletes from 164 countries and regions, a record in the event's 39-year history. Source:Xinhua
