Following her triumph in the 21km race at the Kampala International Marathon over the weekend, Ugandan long distance star Jane Suuto has set her sights on the world stage, particularly the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
"I think I am reaching the prime of my career and should compete at major competitions next year," Suuto was quoted by Daily Monitor on Tuesday as saying.
Despite carrying an Achilles injury into the race, Suuto easily won the race in one hour, 19 minutes and 21 seconds, beating her closest opponent Annet Chelangat (1:20:29) by over one minute.
"After here I am going to rest, treat the injury and head to Kenya for training. I'll be running a marathon in Marrakesh (Morocco) early next year, which should help me gauge my form," she added.
Suuto hopes to qualify in the 10,000m since there is no half marathon race at the Olympics.
The qualification campaign opens on January 1, 2008 and Suuto will have to run below 32 minutes in 10,000m to be in China next year.
