Two New Zealand weightlifters were a step closer to qualification for next year's Beijing Olympics, local media reported Sunday.

Mark Spooner and Richard Patterson have lifted New Zealand Olympic Committee qualification marks, Spooner in the men's 69-kilogram class, and Patterson in the 77-kilogram class.

However, New Zealand must now earn the right to send athletes to the Beijing games with a strong placing needed at the Oceania Champs in Auckland next March.
