President of the Brazilian Olympic Committee Gerasime Bozikis announced on Friday that MonchoLopez will be the head coach of the Brazilian men's pre-Olympic basketball team.
Lopez is in his 36th year as a coach, however, his experience as a national team's head coach is limited.
The Spanish native, 63, coached the national teams of the Dominican Republic, Morocco, Sweden, Tunisia and the Spanish team "B".
Last time when Lopes actually headed a national team was with Morocco during the 1996-1997 season.
While coaching the Dominican Republic, Lopes won the silver medal in the Central American Games in 1994-1995, and led the Swedish team in 1980-1981 when many of the current Brazilian players were not even born yet.
Only three current players were born by that time: Valtinho, Marcelinho Machado and Guilherme Giovannoni.
With more than a decade's absence from coaching a national team, Bozikis, however, is confident that the Spaniard will help the Brazilian national team with his leadership and experience throughout, at least, the pre-Olympic competitions. Source: Xinhua
