District clubs and zonal associations that have not paid affiliation and participation fees will miss out on the Uganda National Cross Country Championships due February 9 in Soroti District.
All associations affiliated to Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) are required to pay annual affiliation and participation fees of 0.1 million Ugandan shillings (60 U.S. dollars) to participate in national events.
"It's unfortunate but some athletes might miss out on national team slots because their leaders are irresponsible," UAF president Dan Tamwesigire was quoted by Daily Monitor on Friday as saying.
The National Championships will be used to select a team for the World Cross Country Championships due March 30 in Edinburgh, Scotland but athletes from defaulting association may have to give up on the international meet.
Some of the debtors include Jinja District, Kabale, Kabarole, Kalangala, Kampala Central, Kasese, Kapchorwa, Kumi, Kyenjojo, Mayuge, Mbale, Masindi, Mayuge, Rukungiri, Mbarara and Yumbe, among others.
Sports delegates have incessantly blamed district sports officers for frustrating their efforts by refusing to clear the fees. Sports officers though also blame government for not allocating them funds to promote local sports.
