China's Zhang Lin renewed the national record for men's 400 meters freestyle at the Swimming China Open here on Saturday.
Zhang finished in three minutes and 45.04 seconds, 1.23 seconds off an early national record which he set at a swim meet in Queensland, Australia last December.
He had the quickest reaction on the pad and led Saturday's race to the end.
The veteran freestyler had been edged to the third at Friday's men's 200 meters freestyle, which he said was not satisfying and was blamed on insufficient preparation.
The 21-year-old said he was better prepared Saturday but the new record was "well beyond his expectation".
Zhang's stunning performance held off teammate Sun Yang, who swam in 3:49.34, more than four seconds behind.
Poland's Pawel Korzeniowski finished third in 3:49.94.
The world record for the event is 3:40.08, set by Australia's Ian Thorpe in 2002.
