President of the Zambia Cricket Union (ZCU) Andrew Shawa has been elected new head of the Central and Southern African Cricket Union, Times of Zambia reported Friday.
During a Press briefing in Lusaka Thursday ZCU cricket development officer Saidi Malama said that Shawa's appointment to the highest rank in African cricket, comes in light of the extraordinary strides made in Zambian cricket under his leadership.
He said Shawa, a veteran broadcaster, was elected last weekend at the African Cricket Association (ACA) held in Benoni, South Africa.
Malama said the International Cricket Council (ICC) which is the cricket world body, had commended Shawa over the smooth running of Zambian cricket adding that there was a lot of transparency in ZCU since Shawa's reign.
"The ZCU would like to congratulate Dr Shawa on this appointment and would also like to take this opportunity to invite various stakeholders to help in Zambian cricket development," Malama said.
Shawa's election also gives him the additional responsibility of overseeing Central and Southern African cricket development programs.
Malama said that with this progressive step, Zambia would now be competing at the highest level of African cricket.
He also said that Zambia had been given the privilege to host the World Cup League Division Two tournaments from August 20 to 24and that the nation would also seek to improve its rankings in the African cricket league through this tournament.
Furthermore, Zambia will be making its debut appearance at the Eastern Junior Club Cricket festival slated for South Africa laterthis year.
Malama said the festival would give Zambian cricket players recognition, as it is an international event.
