A senior South Korean football official offered to resign on Friday over the national squad's performances during the recent Asian qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup.
The national squad failed to "live up to the expectations of football fans" although they finished first in their group," said Lee Young-moo, who takes charge of the national team at the Korea Football Association.
"I should have supported the team better as head of the technical committee," Lee said. "I feel responsible for the performance during the third round."
"We did not score when given chances and did not concentrate hard enough," Lee said. "No matter how good the coach is, if the players don't have good capacities, the team cannot play well," Lee said, adding the head coach Huh Jung-moo did his best to lift the team to the top spot in its group that included Turkmenistan, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Jordan.
The national squad's world ranking has slumped eight places to 53rd place on Wednesday, according to the FIFA.
