China will launch a special investigation into producers and sellers of dope products to create a "clean and fair" environment for next year's Olympic Games, China's drug watchdog said on Thursday.

The inspection will focus on the production and distribution of performance-enhancing substances including protein assimilation preparations and peptide hormones, said Yan Jiangying, spokeswoman of the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA).

The inspection will start in a few days and continue until the closing ceremony of the Olympics.

Both the manufacturers and retailers will be inspected to make sure they have strictly abided by the Anti-Doping Code which was implemented in China in March, 2004.

Since the code came into effect, the SFDA has been responsible for licensing manufacturers of doping products, supervising distribution and controlling exports and imports.
