Brazil produced an outstanding performance to demolish Serbia 3-0 in Nagoya of Japan on Thursday, moving one step closer to a top three finish at the World Cup and a berth in in Beijing Olympics.
Obviously motivated by their heavy loss to Italy the previous day, the South American champions sent shell-shocked Serbia spinning to a straight-sets defeat 25-13, 25-14 and 25-21.
"With strong work we produced an excellent performance today. We tried to forget about yesterday's game, so today's game became quite a different one," said Brazil captain Helia Fofao. "It is up to today's game whether we remained an underdog or a team to have another chance to recover."
The Brazilians, who were led by Sheilla Castro with 16 points, converted on 51 of its 93 spiking opportunities, compared with 29-for-101 for Serbia.
"I do not know really what happened today. Maybe we played very bad but I think today Brazil played very, very good, especially in defense," said Serbia head coach Zoran Terzic. "All the time we cannot put the ball on the floor. I think our attack is not so bad, but today it was like a cat playing with a mouse, something like that."
"We can play very good against all teams in the world I think, but against Brazil we have some problems. I hope next time will be much better," he added.
Brazil, the silver medallist in the 2006 World Championship, improved its win-loss record at the World Cup to 8-2 while the Serbs dropped to 7-3.
In Friday's last round, Brazil will play Japan while Serbia takes on Cuba.
