President of International Boxing Association (AIBA) Ching-Kuo Wu said here on Sunday China is hopeful to win a gold on boxing at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and he would like to award the gold himself.

Wu made the remarks on the sidelines of the ongoing Beijing international boxing invitational tournament that kicked off Saturday.

He said China made a breakthrough in the AIBA world championships by winning one gold and four bronzes. "Every bronze winner has the potential to win gold at the Olympics and China is likely to win its first Olympic gold next year."

However, Wu also said it was very hard to forecast the medals for the 2008 Olympic Games and what the Chinese team needed to do was to continue to train hard.

With the 11 gold medals spreading among seven countries, the AIBA world championships is a perfect illustration of the AIBA andits honest and transparent officiating, the AIBA president, who was elected last November, said.

Zou Shiming who won the gold in the 48 kg category at the AIBA world championships did not participate in the Beijing international boxing invitational tournament .

The Beijing international boxing invitational tournament is being held at Beijing Worker's Indoor Arena (BWIA), as one of a series of test events for the Beijing 2008 Olympics.

Seventy boxers from 17 countries and regions, including 12 from the Chinese mainland, participated in the tournament.

The tournament is hosted by Chinese Boxing Federation. The direct elimination system is applied, and there will be a total of 70 bouts, including preliminaries, semifinals and finals.

BWIA, renovated in 2006, will be the Olympic boxing and Paralympic judo competitions in 2008.

"Good Luck Beijing" sports events serve as a warm-up and rehearsal prior to the 2008 Olympic Games. Beginning from July this year and May next year, over 10,000 athletes from various countries and regions will come to Beijing to participate in 42 sports events.
