Brazilian swimmer Thiago Pereiraon Sunday fought off fatigue to capture the gold medal in the 400 meters medley in the South American swim meet which was held at the Pinheiros Club in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Pereira finished the race with a time of 4 minutes 27.58 seconds, well behind his personal best of 4 minutes 11.14 seconds.

The swimmer said the fast pace of intense competitions with little time to rest in between caused the fatigue.

The swim is believed to help Brazil determine exactly who will be going to the Olympic swimming pool in Beijing in August.

Another Brazilian Lucas Salatta finished in the second place with eight seconds behind Pereira. Chilean Benjamin Gusman took home the bronze medal with a time of 4 minutes 37.29 seconds.
