A Greek swimmer tested positive for banned substances in an out-of-competition test and will have a second sample tested before his name is made public, the Greek swimming federation said on Tuesday.

"The Greek Swimming Federation is saddened by this, lone, incident which cannot taint the hundreds of athletes of our national teams and the 51 of our Olympic squad," the federation said in a statement.

The athlete initially returned a negative sample but the Greek doping agency contacted the federation on Tuesday to inform them the sample had been rechecked and was positive.

In early April, 11 of 14 Greek national weightlifting team members tested positive for drugs, triggering a judicial inquiry and forcing the resignation of long-time national coach Christos Iakovou.
