Tim Montgomery, the former sprint world record holder and the United States' Olympic champion, was sentenced to 46 months in prison on Friday for dealing in fraudulent checks.

He pleaded guilty last year to conspiracy in the bank fraud and money laundering plot. Prosecutors said he had a hand in depositing bogus checks worth 1.7 million U.S. dollars.

Montgomery won an Olympic 4x100m relay gold in Sydney 2000 and set a 100m world record of 9.78 seconds, which was erased after he was proved doping.

The 33-year-old retired in 2005 after he was banned from athletics for doping and has a child with Marion Jones, who was stripped of her five 2000 Olympic track medals and is now in prison after sentenced to six months for lying about the check scam and about her doping.

Among the other defendants are Montgomery's former track coach,1976 Olympic gold medalist Steven Riddick, and his former agent, Charles Wells.
