A 76-year-old Nepalese national broke the record by successfully reaching the summit of Mt. Qomolangma, the world's highest mountain, on Sunday.

Min Bahadur Sherchan became the oldest person to summit the 8,848-meter Mt. Qomolangma early Sunday morning with his climbing guides, Tourism Ministry official Ramesh Chetri said.

He beat the record set last year by Japanese climber Katsusuke Yanagisawa, who scaled the peak at age 71. Sherchan was in good health and was descending from the summit, Chetri said.

The former soldier has climbed smaller mountains before his Mt. Qomolangma feat and has been an active sportsman.

About a dozen climbers were reported to have scaled Mt. Qomolangma on Sunday following one of the busiest weeks in the mountain's climbing season, THT on-line reported.

On Thursday, Appa Sherpa climbed the peak to set a record for the 18th time. Appa broke his own record of climbing Mt. Qomolangma 17 times set last year.
