Six Cuban judokas, including world and Pan-American champions, will contend in the judo tournament of the 13th Paralympic Games of Beijing from Sept. 6 to 17 to seek for the best performance in the history, local press said Tuesday. The champions of Sydney-2000 Sergio Perez, 60kg, and Isao Cruz,81 kg, will lead the team for their third Paralympics, coach Senen Ramos said. The Cuban competitors include continental champion Victor Sanchez (66kg), the winner of the Sao Paulo World Cup-2007 Jorge Hierrezuelo (73kg), the second place of the Sao Paulo World Cup-2007 Juan Cortada (100kg) and the first place in the Pan-American in Rio de Janeiro-2007 Giangaliani Jimenez (more than 100kg). Ramos affirmed that "they are consolidated athletes. They have technical-tactic level and the strength necessary, strategic weapons to face the known rivals, they will be on equal conditions." Ramos, who won the team tournaments in the Brommat-2006 and Sao Paulo-2007 World Cups, said that his disciples could win a medal in six opportunities, and "I would be happier if three of them would be gold." As consideration rivals Ramos mentioned Azerbaijan, France, Brazil and Japan, but he added: "All have potential in one or two division, we have potential in all of them." During the 12th Paralympic of Athens-2004, the Cuban judoka Rafael Torres (more than 100kg) won a bronze medal. In the Paralympic Games of Athens-2004, 136 countries and regions competed and Cuba won the 43rd place of the final medal tally with 11 medals, two of them gold, two silver and seven bronze.
