World champion Pang Jiaying smashes Asian record to crown 100m freestyle

China's swimming world champion Pang Jiaying smashed Asian record to seize the women's 100m freestyle gold here Thursday at the 11th Chinese National Games.

Pang, winner of the 2009 World Championships, timed 53.13 seconds in the final to renew the Asian record of 53.84 set by second-placed Zhu Yinwen at the Beijing Olympics.

Zhu, former Asian record holder, chalked up 53.86 to stand runner-up to Pang. Zhu's teammate Tang Yi from Shanghai municipality, placed third in 53.88.

The world record of the event is 52.07.

Pang also took a bronze medal in the women's 200m freestyle final at the on-going National Games slated for Oct. 16-28.

At the 2009 Rome Worlds, Pang, together with her national teammates Yang Yu, Zhu Qianwei and Liu Jing, seized gold in seven minutes 42.08 seconds in the 4x200m freestyle relay, knocking more than two seconds off Australia's world record of 7:44.31 set at the Beijing Olympics.
