Olympic champion Liu Zige to shine in Asian swimming championships

Olympic champion Liu Zige and world champion Zhang Lin will lead a group of Chinese elite swimmers at the Asian Swimming Championships which ran through Nov. 21-28.

The Championships, including swimming, synchronized swimming and diving, are being held by China Swimming Association (CSA), Guangdong Provincial Sports Administration and People's Municipal Government of Foshan, under the auspices of the Asian Swimming Federation (AASF).

As one of the top events in Asia, the Championships have attracted 434 athletes and officials from 21 Asian countries and regions. However, according to the organizers, the top athletes from Japan and South Korea are absent from the Championships.

Synchronized swimming was held during Nov. 21-23 with seven events on offer, with China winning five golds and Japan bagging two.

The four-day swimming competition which starts from Nov. 25 to Nov. 28 with 38 events at stake while China sent a second-string line-up to take part in the diving contests running from Nov. 27-28.

Liu, women's 200 meters butterfly winner at the Beijing Olympic Games, set a new long course world mark 2:01.81 at the Chinese National Games in Jinan, east China on October 21.

She continued her magic record breaking pace in the World Cup short course series as she claimed 2:02.50 in Stockholm, Sweden on Nov. 11 and 2:00.78 in Berlin, Germany, on Nov. 15.

The 20-year-old Liu is expected to defend her trade-mark butterfly events in Foshan while world champion Zhang Lin will only show off in the 200m freestyle instead of 400m and 1500m free.

Zhang was the first world champion of the Chinese men's swimmers in history when he won the men's 800m free in a world record time of 8:32.12.
