May 12 marks the 184-day countdown to the 16th Asian Games to be held in southern China's Guangzhou from Nov. 12 to Nov. 27 of this year. Preparations for the games are well under way, and the main structure of all new venues has been constructed, according to the Guangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee.
The construction of venues has always been a top priority. Reporters learned that there will be 53 competition venues, 17 training venues and the Asian Games Town, which consist of the Athletes' Village, the Main Media Center and five other major parts, available for the games.
The organizing committee said the Athletes' Village, the Technical Officials' Village, the Media Village, the Main Media Center and the International Broadcast Center have been constructed and other new venues already have had their main structure constructed.
The renovation and extension of 18 old venues such as the Guangzhou Gymnasium, the University Town Triathlon Venue, the Foshan Lingnan Pearl Gymnasium, the Foshan Shiji Swimming and Diving Pools and the Dongguan Gymnasium has also been completed.
"Since most venues have basically been completed, we are beginning to prepare for the venue operation," said a committee official. The committee has begun establishing work teams and command centers for matches and the opening and closing ceremonies.
