Sixth-ranked Andy Roddick advanced in his opener at the Australian Open on Monday with a 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 victory over Czech qualifier Lukas Dlouhy, while Andy Murray became the first of the top 10 players to fall when he went down 7-5, 6-4, 0-6, 7-6 (5) to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France.

The ninth-seeded Murray, winner at Doha two weeks ago, double-faulted to give Tsonga a 5-4 lead in the tiebreaker, but won the next point to stay in the match.

Tsonga got match point on his serve, then clinched it when Murray pushed a forehand wide.

"These are the matches you come back from — you learn a lot from them," Murray said. "I don't think it's the end of the world."

Although Roddick pounded 28 winners and committed just 11 unforced errors, Roddick needed to ride his big first serve into the second round, as the aggressive Dlouhy often had him on his back foot.

Second-ranked Rafael Nadal, the only player to beat Roger Federer at the last 10 Grand Slams — at the last two French Opens — played Viktor Troicki of Serbia later Monday.

In a match between two former finalists, 2003 runner-up Rainer Schuettler of Germany beat 2001 runner-up Arnaud Clement of France 6-4, 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-4. No. 11 Tommy Robredo beat Mischa Zverev 4-6, 2-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4, 7-5, advancing along with No. 24 Jarkko Nieminen, No. 28 Gilles Simon and American Mardy Fish.
