Maria Sharapova advanced into the second round of the 2008 Australian Open with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Jelena Kostanic Tosic on Monday.
Sharapova broke Tosic's first service game and rallied to a 2-0lead in the first set, and with powerful aces she found the way to the victory.
She had four aces and kept more than 90 percent of the first serves in the first set.
Tosic tried to fight back in the second set and the gap between the two closed as they tied at 3-3.
Fifth seeded Sharapova struggled to maintain her dominance as she broke the service game again and raced into the final victory 6-4.
"I played a pretty tricky opponent, someone that I haven't played in a while. The last couple matches that I played in Asia were against pretty big-hitting girls. So she was definitely a trickier opponent. You don't see too many of those around these days." said Sharapova after the match.
Sharapova, who entered the final of the tournament last year but was defeated by unseeded Serena Williams, will face a test against Lindsay Davenport in the next round.
