Former champion Amelie Mauresmo of France rallied from one set down to beat Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain 4-6, 6-1 and 6-1 for the third round at the Wimbledon tennis tournament here on Wednesday.

With the win, the 2006 champion Mauresmo will play her third round clash against another former winner Serena Williams of the United States.

Ruano Pascual, 34, looked impressive in the first set while Mauresmo, six years junior, struggled with a stiff knee. However, the 29th seeded Frenchwoman still regained her prowess to easily sweep aside her opponent, a nine-time grand slam doubles champion.

For her injury that forced her to withdraw from last week's Eastbourne tournament, Mauresmo said "(I was) really a little bit tight in terms of movement at the beginning I mean, the whole first set."

"I didn't really know how the leg would react, so I was probably a little bit scared."

Facing twice-winner Williams in the next round, Mauresmo who lost both their previous meetings here in the 2002 and 2004 semi-finals, said it will be "tough, definitely."

"I haven't seen her play yet here but I basically know her game pretty well and what she's going to do and what to expect. I hope I'll be ready in a couple of days for this match."
