After upsetting former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic, China's shock specialist Peng Shuai stunned another former world No. 1 Maria Sharapova here on Wednesday, advancing to the quarterfinal of the ongoing China Open tennis tournament.
In the first set, both players tried to focus on the baseline. Peng succeeded in breaking in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead. The 23-year-old accomplished another break in the eighth game, winning the first set by 6-2.

Peng maintained her stable performance in the second set, breaking to lead 5-2. Sharapova fought back to 4-5, and survived two match points in the 10th game. However, Peng refused to let got he third match point, finishing her break to claim the victory 6-4.
Sharapova, winner of three Grand Slam titles, made too many unforced errors, while Peng Shuai secured her victory through her solid defense.
Peng will next play the winner between Petrova and S. Williams in the quarterfinal.
