The 5.5 million U.S. dollars Omega Mission Hills Golf World Cup 2009 opened on Wednesday.
Since golf was voted into the 2016 and 2020 Olympics, Mission Hills Golf World Cup 2009, held from Nov. 26 to 29, has been labeled as the first "Olympic test event", and is also the highest level in team competition.
Fifty-six players from 28 countries and regions will compete in55th World Cup on the 18-hole Olazabal course at Mission Hills Golf Club. The 72 strokeplay includes two rounds of fourballs and two of foursomes, beginning with the fourball format on Thursday.
The field of players is headed by Sergio Garcia, world No. 8, representing Spain for the fourth time since 2001, 2002 and 2005 at the World Cup. The five-time Ryder Cup player, partnered by compatriot Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano, is ready to bring the title to Spain, the runner-up in last year.
"It's going to be a great test like it's been every year. I'm just hoping that my partner and I can do well and bring the victory to Spanish soil. There are always a lot of good teams at the World Cup. I think that the Swedish team, the defending champions, will be very good. The Americans always seem to bring a good solid team into the tournament. Australia, of course, is going to have a good one coming in. One of the Asian teams could be solid." Garcia said.
Defending champion Sweden's Henrik Stenson and Robert Karlsson are back to defend their title. Stenson is in good form after winning the Players Championship this year, he also gained a sound result in the PGA Championship (ranked sixth) and the U.S. Open (ranked ninth).
England's Ian Poulter and Ross Fisher partner for the second time at the Mission Hills. Ranked 6th last year, the duo are confident to make a better result. The United States has never won the title since 2000 and finished 9th last year. In the coming competition, Nick Watney, who enjoyed his best year on tour in 2009 will pair with John Merrick.
Germany, twice winners of the tournament, will attempt to win a third World Cup with six-time European Tour winner Martin Kaymer and veteran Alex Cejka.
Hosts China's golden pair Zhang Lianwen and Liang Wenchong finished 11th the year before last, which is their highest ranking ever, but only ranked 17th last year. The duo are looking to perform better in their third consecutive year at the World Cup.
The tournament are to be broadcast in over 140 countries and regions. From 2007, the Mission Hills will hold the Golf World Cup for the next 12consecutive years.
