World No. 1 and defending champion Serena Williams takes on the Belgian comeback queen Justine Henin in their first ever clash at an Australian Open.
After returning to the game following a 20-month hiatus, retiring when she was No. 1, Henin came into the Australian Open draw unseeded. On her way into the final she has knocked out two fellow Belgians, Kirsten Flipkens and Yanina Wickmayer, three seeded players, Elena Dementieva No. 5, Nadia Petrova No. 19 and Alisa Kleybanova No. 27, before a convincing straight sets win over Zheng Jie of China in the semifinals.
Williams has also cruised through the tournament with wins over Urszula Radwanska, Petra Kvitova, the No. 32 seed Carla Suarez Navarro, the No. 13 seed Samantha Stosur, the No. 7 seed Victoria Azarenka and Li Na, the No. 16 seed, in the semifinals.
Williams and Henin have met on 13 occasions with Williams winning the head-to-heads 7-6. However in their Grand Slam head-to- heads Henin is up 4-2.
Williams has won 10singles Grand Slam titles, four at the Australian Open, while Henin has won seven, one of which was at the Australian Open in 2004.
In one of the most evenly matched women's challenges on paper, it is anyone's guess who will be the next Australian Open champion.
Rounding out play at Rod Laver Arena are the No. 1 men's doubles pair, Bob and Mike Bryan will meet No. 2 seeds Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic in the men's doubles final.
Earlier in the day, at 1pm, British favorite Laura Robson meets the No.6 seed Karolina Pliskova in the Junior Girls' Singles Championship at Rod Laver Arena while in the Junior Boys' Singles Championship Australia's own Sean Berman meets the No. 14 seed Tiago Fernandes from Brazil.
