The Saint Sylvester Road Race, the most traditional street race in Brazil, will be raced by20,000 people on Dec. 31, the biggest number since its first edition in 1925, the local press informed on Friday.

In its 83rd edition, the race has been held on all New Year's Eves since its inauguration. This year, the streets of Sao Paulo, where it has always taken place, will welcome 5,000 participants more than in 2006.

The women's race will start at 4:30 p.m. (local time), 15 minutes before the men's. The event will also have a wheelchair race this year, destined to disabled athletes, scheduled to start at 3:15 p.m.

Five-time Saint Sylvester champion, Kenyan runner Paul Tergat still holds the record time (43 minutes 12 seconds, set in 1995) for the race, which covers a distance of 15 kilometers. Another Kenyan athlete, Robert Cheruiyot, has won it twice, in 2002 and 2004, apart from finishing second in 2005, and will participate in the 2007 edition.

Colombia will have four athletes in the race: South American 5,000 meters champion Willian Narajo; Javier Guarin, the best-ranked foreign male racer in the 2006 edition; Bertha Sanchez, the best-ranked foreigner in the 2006 women's race; and Jacinto Lopez.

Five Peruvians are also expected to show off: Gustavo Pereira Altez, Jaime Caldua, Juan Diego Contreras and Ricardo Castilho, in the men's race; and Wilma Arizapana, in the women's.
