China's Li Meiju on Saturday sailed into women's shot put final at the 12th IAAF World Indoor Championships in Valencia, Spain, along with reigning outdoor World Champion Valerie Vili of New Zealand.
Li made a throw of 18.55 meters in her first attempt, surpassing the qualification standard of 18.45 meters.
Vili was in outstanding form with a throw of 19.72 meters in her first attempt, setting a new Oceanian record.
Vili was the red hot favorite for the indoor world title, having won the outdoor world title in Osaka, Japan, last year.
German Christina Schwanitz also went through to the final with a throw of 18.97 meters, followed by Russian Anna Omarova with 18.58.
The other four qualifiers for the final, scheduled for Sunday afternoon, are Nadzeya Ostapchuk of Belarus, Chiara Rosa of Italy, Cleopatra Borel-Brown of Trinidad and Tobago, and Misleydis Gonzalez of Cuba.
Another Chinese, Li Ling, failed to qualify after finishing 13th in the qualification session with 17.76 meters. Source: Xinhua
