Tim Duncan scored 15 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to guide the defending National Basketball Association champion San Antonio Spurs past the Houston Rockets 90-84 at home on Friday.

Duncan scored 14 in the first quarter, matching French guard Tony Parker's game total, while Michael Finley contributed 17 points and Argentina's Manu Ginobili added 19 to lead the Spurs.

The Rockets, without top scorer Tracy McGrady due to a sprained right elbow, were led by reserve Luis Scola's career-high 20 points.

Shane Battier added 16 points and Chinese star Yao Ming added 14 points and nine rebounds.

The Spurs scored the final nine points of the first half for a 49-46 lead at the break. Houston grabbed a 61-60 edge with 9:16 into the third quarter but Ginobili hit two 3-pointers and added an assist in an 8-0 run for a 69-60 edge then held off the Rockets at the finish.
