ATLANTA: Forward Josh Childress has signed a three-year, $20 million deal to play with Greek club Olympiakos after turning down an offer to stay with the NBA's Atlanta Hawks.
The 25-year-old restricted free agent had been offered a five-year deal from the Hawks worth $33 million but turned it down. The move is unprecedented for a player of his caliber.
"This is a unique situation with Greece, and to my knowledge it is believed to be the highest contract ever awarded in Euroleague history," Hawks General Manager Rick Sund said on the team's website.
Childress was one of Atlanta's key bench players last season, and helped the Hawks make the postseason for the first time since 1999.
In four years in Atlanta, Childress averaged 11.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.
